Abstract

This study analyzes the Big Five Personality Traits represented by Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III in Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon. Using Costa and McCrae’s Five-Factor Model, the study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a psycholinguistic approach. Through documentation and contextual classification of Hiccup’s dialogues and interactions, 99 data were identified: Openness to Experience (42), Agreeableness (30), Neuroticism (13), Conscientiousness (9), and Extraversion (5). Openness to Experience was most frequently represented through creativity, curiosity, flexible thinking, and alternative problem-solving, while Agreeableness appeared through empathy, care, and cooperation. The other dimensions were represented through emotional responses, responsibility, and situational assertiveness. Overall, Hiccup is portrayed as an imaginative and compassionate protagonist whose approach contrasts with conventional Viking ideals of physical strength and aggression.
