Abstract

Science learning in primary schools plays an important role in developing students' conceptual understanding and scientific literacy. However, science instruction is still predominantly teacher-centered and emphasizes memorization. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of local wisdom-based science learning in improving primary school students' conceptual understanding. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed. Data were collected through concept understanding tests, observations, and student response questionnaires, and analyzed using N-Gain and independent samples t-tests. The results indicated that students who participated in local wisdom-based science learning achieved significantly higher conceptual understanding, learning motivation, and classroom participation than those receiving conventional instruction. These findings suggest that local wisdom-based science learning is an effective contextual approach for enhancing students' conceptual understanding while promoting the preservation of local cultural values.
