Abstract

This study analyzes the role of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in protecting and managing marine resources and examines illegal fishing and its implications for maritime security in the North Natuna Sea. The study employed a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach based on a literature review. Data were obtained from scientific articles, academic books, research reports, official government documents, legislation, and relevant institutional publications. The data were analyzed through organization, categorization, interpretation, and examination from international law and international relations perspectives. The findings indicate that the EEZ provides a legal basis for Indonesia to exercise sovereign rights over the exploration, exploitation, conservation, and management of marine resources. However, its effective implementation continues to face challenges from illegal fishing, the extensive surveillance area, limited operational capacity, and the complexity of cross-border activities. Strengthening technology-based surveillance, institutional coordination, law enforcement, maritime patrols, and diplomacy is therefore necessary to enhance marine resource protection and maritime security in the North Natuna Sea
